What is Multimedia?

When we talk about Multimedia we are talking about anything that uses a variety of different artistic or communicative forms of media in the same body of work/production.  The three main types are Sound, so any music, sound effects, voice overs built into a website or an image, Video, which can take the form of youtube clips, tik tok videos, product presentations and cover videos.  Finally there are images, which range from product images to family photos and all types of graphic designs, which all fall under the same umbrella.

1: BBC

The BBC website is a great example of a website that combines all types of multimedia in one place.  It contains videos, live news updates which also come in video and/or text format, giving its users many different ways in which to digest their content.  It also provides links to it's multitude of radio stations which can also be listened to live or you can access recordings of old shows and also podcasts.

 2: Spotify

The Spotify app/website is another good example of the different uses of multimedia.  Although primarily it operates as a music streaming service, it also features bios of the bands/artists, along with information on upcoming tour dates etc.  It also has some videos for certain artists/songs, if not all, but this is something they seem to be focusing on more moving forward.  All in all it's a great app which gives its users access to loads of different types of media, creating tailored playlists based on each users musical preferences.

3:  My90sTV

This final website is a personal favourite of mine.  It has an outdated tv on the screen with a power button, channl + and channel - buttons as well as a volume control.  The idea of the site is that it takes you back to what TV was like in the 90's, there are loads of different categories to choose from ranging from news, to old music videos, cartoons and talkshows.  The site has a really retro aesthetic but also goes to show just how long multimedia has existed.
